If you receive our monthly colour me beautiful newsletter you’ll have seen our tips on how to select the best swimwear for your body shape. After looking forward to your holiday all year long, you will naturally want to look fabulous poolside!
One aspect of our holiday wardrobe that can sometimes be overlooked is a stylish poolside cover-up. If you’re on a beach break this Summer then you’ll be spending the majority of your time switching from sun bed to casual eatery, to poolside bar, so you need something that not only looks great, but is comfortable too.
Here’s our round-up of the best beach cover-ups to buy now. Snap one up now before you jet off to the sun!
The Maxi Dress
A classic poolside cover-up, a maxi dress is a great choice. It’s loose fit will ensure you keep cool and comfortable and the longer length is great if you prefer not to show your legs too much. Choose one in a fabulous colour as it’s likely you’ll be make-up free, to ensure your skin glows and your eyes sparkle!
We love this maxi from Monsoon, which will look particularly fabulous on those of you who fall into the Warm dominant colour category.
If you have a Lean Column body shape, then you’re lucky enough to have your pick of styles that will look fabulous on you!
We love this gorgeous, teal playsuit from Next. Easy to slip on and off and perfect for trips around the local area when you need a break from sunbathing. Simply pair with a colourful beach bag, necklace and sandals.
The Bandeau Dress
Avoid tan lines with a strapless sundress in a soft, flowing fabric. This cobalt blue bandeau dress from John Lewis is the perfect choice for those of you with a Triangle body shape as it will balance out your proportions as well as skimming over your hips and bottom.
It’s stunning vibrant blue colour will work fabulously on both Clears and Cools.
Another beach classic, there’s a reason the kaftan has been around for so long. Undeniably chic and easy to wear, the shorter versions are also perfect for showing off a great pair of legs! There are lots of options when it comes to kaftans, you could go sheer if you want to show off your figure, choose a flattering block of colour, or opt for something more romantic and floral.
This Dickens & Jones kaftan from House of Fraser offers just the right amount of coverage and it’s delicate print will appeal to those of you who fall into the Romantic style category!
Don’t Forget To Accessorise!
Even when you’re on the beach or by the pool, accessories are needed to complete your look! There are some gorgeous over-sized beach bags available in the shops right now. Go for something really bold and funky, it’s an item that won’t get much use for the rest of the year so have fun with it! Embellished sandals, oversized hats and a pair of fabulous sunglasses are all essentials – and a flamboyant cocktail of course!

Bathing suits – which style and colour will enable you to bare all?
Your summer holiday should be something to look forward to but if the thought of wearing your swimming costume fills you with dread, don’t panic, just follow these simple rules to achieve beachwear body confidence and ‘seas the day’!
A lot of women believe that the darker the colour of the suit, the more flattering. But that’s definitely not the case! When you’re flashing more flesh than usual, your costume needs to be in one of your most flattering colours. For example, if you have auburn hair, wear a green or turquoise bathing suit.
In fact it is also imperative to ensure that the details such as ties, prints and cut, flatter your body shape not draw attention to your challenges!
Small bust, straight body shape
- Make the most of your dainty bust line by choosing tops with built-in padding – nothing says poolside glamour quite like metallic sheens in bronze, silver and gold this summer.
- Halter-necks and bandeau work wonders by giving the illusion of a fuller bust.
- Avoid solid colour, wear geometric patterns instead, the Aztec/Mexican prints this season are definitely for you.
- Embellish to your hearts content with jewels, ties, ruffles and bows at the bust and hip line.
Full bust, curvy body shape
- Spend as much as you can afford on swimwear – choose suits that have underwire or built-in support and wider straps – they’ll be more supportive.
- V, scoop or square necklines will be most flattering.
- Keep away from boy shorts, skimpy bottoms and styles with skirts – or you will draw attention to your widest point.
- Embrace retro blooms and tap into your inner 50s siren and work that vintage-inspired feminine shape. Grace Kelly eat your heart out!
- For Summer 2015, piping is also being used on swimsuits to create graphic patterns and flattering silhouettes, black lines adorn swimwear everywhere. It’s all very surfer-chic.
All you need now is a sunhat, a great pair of 70s chunky platforms to lengthen your legs, some chic shades and you’re ready for the beach or to look ‘cool by the pool’. Yes, you do want to look fab in those holiday snaps, after all, you will be looking at them until your next beach holiday!
