Here at colour me beautiful we LOVE getting dressed to the nines and heading out on the town during the festive season. A bit of sparkle, a fabulous pair of shoes and a killer dress all make for the perfect party look.
All too often we’ll spend hours, or even days, searching for the perfect outfit for that special festive event, only to leave our beauty look to the last minute. This party season make sure you plan ahead to ensure your pout is perfectly polished too.
A statement lip is the look to be seen in this Winter (those of you who watch The Great British Bake Off will have seen this year’s winner certainly loved a bold lip!), so here are our top tips on which shades to choose and how to make your lips last!
Shades of Red
A bright red is an iconic Hollywood look for a reason; it’s glamorous, sensuous and feminine. Keep the rest of your make-up pared back if you’re going for a strong lip shade; neutral eyes, a little blush and then allow your lip colour to give the real WOW factor! We love Red Carpet, from the colour me beautiful make-up range for a show-stopping look.
Long Lasting Lips
Keeping your lip colour in place all evening can be a challenge for some, but with the right application techniques and products, it needn’t be…
- Gently exfoliate your lips using a specially formulated lip scrub.
- Apply a non-greasy lip balm to soothe and moisturise your lips.
- Apply colour me beautiful lip base to prime your lips, help your lipstick stay in place and reduce feathering.
- Select a colour me beautiful lip pencil in your ideal shade, line and fill your lips in.
- Finally apply your favourite colour me beautiful lipstick and voila!
If you’re unsure which lipstick shade to go for, get in touch with your local colour me beautiful consultant by clicking here for some advice!
When you come for a style consultation with a colour me beautiful personal stylist you will be told which fabrics and textures will work best for you; your body shape, your lifestyle and your budget.
The ultimate luxury fabric for Winter has to be cashmere, once you pull on a cashmere jumper you will never want to take it off! As well as feeling amazing, cashmere is also extremely practical; offering warmth in the Winter and keeping you cool during warmer months. It rarely pulls and doesn’t wrinkle, so although it is often hand-wash only, which for some is less than ideal, it does travel and wear very well.
Whilst it would be impractical (and expensive!) to own a wardrobe full of cashmere, it is certainly worth investing in an item of cashmere clothing this season if you can. You may pay a little more, but if you take care of it, it will last you for many seasons!
There are some amazing cashmere pieces to suit all styles this season, here are a few of our favourites…
For colourful combinations and statement prints, Chinti & Parker has it covered! We love the fun their pieces add to a casual wardrobe!
A sumptuous collection of relaxed cashmere pieces in muted colours; Natural and Classic style personalities, and those who fall into the Soft colour category will be spoilt for choice!
Scottish brand Brora offers a range of simple, classic cashmere pieces for men, women and children, as well as fabulous fair isle hats and berets, scarves and gloves (perfect gifts for Christmas!)
With a wide choice of colours, there is something to fit every palette at Wyse London and if you have a dramatic style personality their bold patterns are sure to appeal. Bright colours, fun prints and unique designs you just won’t be able to resist!
We love the range of colours and styles available from Pure Collection, and what’s more they have a machine washable collection of signature pieces too!

One of the things we love most about the colder months here at colour me beautiful is that it gives us lots of opportunities to accessorise! Specifically by adding a colourful scarf to our outfit.
Scarves are a fantastic way of completing your look and can elevate a simple top and trouser combination to something supremely chic and effortless. Scarves are also the perfect way to inject some colour right next to your face, where it’ll have the most impact!
There are several scarf style options to choose from at this time of year; here’s a round up of some of our favourites
Those who keep an eye on current trends will know that skinny scarves, worn looped once around the neck then allowed to fall simply either side, are the look of the moment! Dramatics, Creatives and Romantics may all want to give this a try. It’s a fabulous look if you have a beautiful long neck and works particularly well when worn with v-neck tops and blouses.
Large blanket scarves in medium-weight materials have been around for several seasons now. They’re extremely versatile with a variety of ways in which they can be worn, meaning you can achieve lots of different looks with just one scarf. Many come in geometric and check designs with a variety of colours in and, because of their medium-weight material, they can often be left on even when you’ve taken your coat off (perfect if you work in a chilly office!)
A simple silk neck handkerchief, tied closely to the neck, is a timeless look. Keep the rest of your outfit simple and go for a floral or paisley print with a myriad of colours in to lift your outfit.
Those of you who have a Natural style personality will want a scarf that is functional as well as looking good, so a chunky snood (a continuous loop of fabric that you simply wrap loosely around your neck once or twice) is a great choice. If you’re petite in scale make sure you don’t go overboard as you may appear to be swamped if your snood is too big! If your Winter coat is in one of the neutral colours from your palette then have fun by adding a snood in one of your accent colours to brighten up those cold, grey days.
THE GOLDEN RULE!
Whichever scarf style you opt for this Autumn/Winter remember; it is vital that you choose one in one of your colours! Colour worn next to our face has the biggest impact, so its important to get it right!

For this week’s blog post one of our recently trained consultants, Sarah Sallows (pictured) from Bexhill on Sea, East Sussex, shares her colour me beautiful story.
“I trained with colour me beautiful as I got to a stage in my life where I felt like I needed to do something for me. My eldest daughter left for university, my youngest had a full time job and my husband has his own very successful business. Basically the long and short of it was… I was bored. I needed something new, something exciting, something to give me a new lease of life.
A couple of years ago I was given a present by my husband to see a colour consultant. I thoroughly enjoyed it and noticed how quickly people would compliment me on my style and how I looked. I never thought I would have the confidence to be a colour consultant or to even travel to London to do the course alone, but after a couple of years toying with the idea… I thought if they can, then why can’t I?
The training for colour me beautiful was an intense week in London. It is amazing how much you can fit in a small amount of time! The course covered all types of colour theories to practical application and using each other and brave volunteers as models. What I found most helpful was the marketing and business element of the course. I loved meeting new people with all different backgrounds and coming together to work as a team.
One of the things I love about being a Colour Consultant is I get to work from home and the hours I choose! I am very flexible with my working hours and I am happy to work the hours that suit my clients.
To date I have had a mixture of clients ranging from all ages. I see clients individually but also have had clients who wanted to have a consultation as a group. I absolutely love the mother and daughter consultations!
Whilst I love the colour consultations, colour me beautiful inspired my passion for make-up. I now offer make-up packages alongside my colour consultations to ensure they are wearing the correct colours to suit their skin tone.
Personally I love one to ones with my clients. I feel they open up more to you and you are able to provide the service specific to them. I feel it is a personal experience and everyone is different. I love making them feel better about themselves.
If you are considering training for a career as a personal stylist I would say GO FOR IT. I wish I had done it years ago. The satisfaction knowing you have helped, inspired and supported someone to make them feel better about themselves is the best job in the world.”

As fashion month gets into full swing around the world and Summer draws to an end, many of us will be thinking about our Autumn/Winter wardrobes.
The start of a new season is the perfect time to take a step back and review your own personal style. We can all get stuck in a rut, or style of dressing that almost becomes like a ‘uniform’ which we end up wearing day in, day out. However, with a few simple steps you can transform your personal style to leave you looking and feeling refreshed for the months ahead!
- Keep it current
Not all of us are slaves to fashion, however it is important that you keep your look current. Glossy magazines and online sites are packed with image inspiration for the coming season and top tips on what is going to be ‘on trend’. Focus on the trends that appeal to you and then decide how you are going to incorporate them into your look in a way that is still ‘you’.
2. Shoe business
Your footwear can make or break your outfit. Throw away those battered boots and invest in a new pair, in one of your neutral shades, to see you through Autumn/Winter. If you can afford to invest a little more they will last you several seasons before they need replacing.
3. Good foundations
Ideally you should be measured and fitted for a new bra around every six months. If you’re overdue then head to the fitting room before you buy a single new item for Autumn! Good foundations are key to ensure comfort and smooth lines on your clothes.
4. Keep it colourful
There are some gorgeous shades around for the coming season so take this opportunity to try some new colours! Even after a colour consultation it can be easy to gravitate towards the same few colours as time goes on so take this opportunity to take another look at your colour swatches and add some new shades into the mix!
5. Buy what you love
Don’t buy anything that is just ‘fine’, you (and your wardrobe) deserve more than that! If you put something on that you feel truly fabulous in, then go ahead and purchase it. When you wear something you feel amazing in you will exude confidence and this will guarantee you look amazing too!
Here’s to a fabulously stylish Autumn/Winter!

One of the biggest style dilemmas many of us will come across during the Summer will be dressing appropriately for work when the temperatures sore.
With the mercury rising once again in the UK this week, many of us will be wondering what is and isn’t appropriate for the office. With more and more workplaces adopting a smart/casual dress code it is important to dress for the weather whilst still looking professional.
Here are some of our top tips to help you navigate this style dilemma!
DO choose your fabrics wisely
Natural fabrics like cotton, will be more lightweight and crease less after a long day sitting down; meaning you’ll look more put together and well presented, even after a hard day of meetings and calls. If you are in a smart/casual environment you could opt for a shirt dress or linen trousers, which tend have a more relaxed cut and therefore are cooler to wear. Ensure that the material you choose isn’t too lightweight, as this can look too casual and reveal more than you may have intended.
DON’T show too much
It may be hot, but this doesn’t mean your hemline can be high. A skirt is a great choice for keeping cool in the heat and midi-length skirts are fabulously flattering on many body shapes (just be sure yours cuts at a flattering point on the leg). You’ll be able to move around with ease and look professional at the same time. If midi isn’t your thing just be sure not to go any higher than just above the knee.
There is a huge trend for off-the-shoulder tops and dresses at the moment, but keep this look for the weekend – it exposes too much flesh, even for a casual workplace. Similarly, leave your backless, asymmetric, spaghetti straps and batwings tops at home. Sleeveless is fine, but cover up by wearing trousers on your bottom half to balance the exposure of your arms (and keep a cardigan or jacket to hand for meetings).
DO dress up
A dress is a great option during the Summer. Choose a cut that is flattering for your body shape and it will help to keep you cool and comfortable on hot, sticky days. Opt for one of the lighter, brighter shades from your colour palette if you can, ensuring you balance the tone of shades you’re wearing, depending on your dominant colour category.
DON’T forget footwear
Leave your flip-flops and gladiator sandals at home! Thanks to Chanel, classic, ladylike sling-backs are making something of a comeback at the moment and these are an elegant option for the office during the Summer. Open toed shoes are fine in most workplaces now, but make sure your toes are immaculate if you decide to go down this route (a great excuse to book in for that pedicure!)
Most offices now have air-conditioning, meaning you may be going from sweltering heat to icy conditions at the touch of an elevator button. If this is the case you will need to cleverly layer your look to keep you warm. The danger here can be that you end up looking too casual (if you choose a loose-fitting cardigan for example). Invest in a lightweight jacket that is cut to suit your figure and, if needed, a lightweight scarf in your best colours. This will keep you warm but still looking smart and both are easy to remove once you leave the office to embrace the glorious sunshine!

If you receive our monthly colour me beautiful newsletter you’ll have seen our tips on how to select the best swimwear for your body shape. After looking forward to your holiday all year long, you will naturally want to look fabulous poolside!
One aspect of our holiday wardrobe that can sometimes be overlooked is a stylish poolside cover-up. If you’re on a beach break this Summer then you’ll be spending the majority of your time switching from sun bed to casual eatery, to poolside bar, so you need something that not only looks great, but is comfortable too.
Here’s our round-up of the best beach cover-ups to buy now. Snap one up now before you jet off to the sun!
The Maxi Dress
A classic poolside cover-up, a maxi dress is a great choice. It’s loose fit will ensure you keep cool and comfortable and the longer length is great if you prefer not to show your legs too much. Choose one in a fabulous colour as it’s likely you’ll be make-up free, to ensure your skin glows and your eyes sparkle!
We love this maxi from Monsoon, which will look particularly fabulous on those of you who fall into the Warm dominant colour category.
If you have a Lean Column body shape, then you’re lucky enough to have your pick of styles that will look fabulous on you!
We love this gorgeous, teal playsuit from Next. Easy to slip on and off and perfect for trips around the local area when you need a break from sunbathing. Simply pair with a colourful beach bag, necklace and sandals.
The Bandeau Dress
Avoid tan lines with a strapless sundress in a soft, flowing fabric. This cobalt blue bandeau dress from John Lewis is the perfect choice for those of you with a Triangle body shape as it will balance out your proportions as well as skimming over your hips and bottom.
It’s stunning vibrant blue colour will work fabulously on both Clears and Cools.
Another beach classic, there’s a reason the kaftan has been around for so long. Undeniably chic and easy to wear, the shorter versions are also perfect for showing off a great pair of legs! There are lots of options when it comes to kaftans, you could go sheer if you want to show off your figure, choose a flattering block of colour, or opt for something more romantic and floral.
This Dickens & Jones kaftan from House of Fraser offers just the right amount of coverage and it’s delicate print will appeal to those of you who fall into the Romantic style category!
Don’t Forget To Accessorise!
Even when you’re on the beach or by the pool, accessories are needed to complete your look! There are some gorgeous over-sized beach bags available in the shops right now. Go for something really bold and funky, it’s an item that won’t get much use for the rest of the year so have fun with it! Embellished sandals, oversized hats and a pair of fabulous sunglasses are all essentials – and a flamboyant cocktail of course!

Finally some warm weather has arrived in the UK, let’s hope it’s here to stay!
During the Summer months (and whilst you’re on holiday) it is a good idea to take a look at your usual beauty routine and make a few tweaks to ensure you’re using products that aren’t going to clog your skin, or leave you exposed to the sun’s damaging rays.
Here are our top tips on how to ensure you look and feel fabulous in the heat!
Up the SPF
Ideally you should protect your skin from damaging UV rays all year round, but during the Summer it’s even more important to do so. You don’t have to slather on heavy-duty sun cream to do this, many brands now have SPF in their facial moisturisers that are lightweight and non-greasy, so you won’t even realise you’re wearing any!
Switch foundation for tinted moisturiser
Here at colour me beautiful HQ we swear by our Morning Light Foundation for most of the year, but come the Summer it’s our Tinted Moisturiser that we’re packing in the suitcase! For a super-lightweight feel and extra hydration, you can’t go wrong with this fabulous product as it’s packed with conditioners and has light diffusing properties to unify your skin tone and correct imperfections.
Usually a lipstick lover? Us too! However, something a little lighter is the order of the day during the Summer. Try a lip gloss for a subtle pop of colour and understated look this season. Our new Extreme Sheen Lip Gloss is perfect to pop in your beach bag to take you from the pool to the cocktail bar!
Prep to perfection
When we’re hot make-up can have a tendency to slide around our face a little, meaning by the end of the day we’re looking more melted than marvellous!
Pop some of our colour me beautiful eye base underneath your eye shadow to prep your eyes for smoother eyeshadow application that will ensure your colour holds for hours with no creasing. This fabulous little product can also be worn alone if you wish, as it goes on sheer, allowing you to subtly brighten your eyes for a natural daytime look.
Facial mists are big news right now, and can be used in a number of ways. The key is to spray a very fine mist (therefore ensuring you don’t saturate your skin). Here are some of our favourite ways to use a facial mist…
- Underneath your moisturiser (to lock in moisture better when your skin has been exposed to the sun)
- To get a dewy texture with your make-up (use it before you put on your foundation or tinted moisturiser to give your skin a subtle glow)
- To set your make-up (spraying a mist on after you’ve applied your base will remove a powdery finish and you can repeat throughout the day to keep you cool!)

The arrival of Summer also heralds the start of wedding season and selecting an outfit that is flattering, comfortable, appropriate for the occasion and adaptable for the great British Summer can often seem daunting!
If you’re looking for some inspiration then you’ve come to the right place! In this post we’ll take you through some outfit suggestions and tips to ensure you stand out for all the right reasons (just try not to upstage the bride!)
You just knew we’d start here didn’t you? Our first tip is to start with a colour that really works for you (i.e. one from your colour category).
Go for a shade from your palette that really makes you feel fabulous – when you feel great, you look great after all. Now is not the time to experiment with new combinations (unless you’re getting some expert guidance from one of our fabulous consultants of course!) Opt for a shade you have worn and loved previously.
Beware! Don’t opt for white or ivory (too bridal), avoid black (even if it is in your colour palette, it is a little morbid for such a joyous occasion) and don’t go TOO bright (Clears and Dramatics, we’re talking to you!)
You Don’t Have To Do a Dress
A dress is an easy option for a wedding, and there’s no reason not to go for this if you find something you love and which flatters your body shape and proportions. However, don’t forget that there are many alternatives to a dress that you may want to try.
Skirts have made something of a comeback in recent years and are a great option for a wedding. Triangle body shapes in particular will love the trend for full, prom-style skirts that is prevalent at the moment and what’s more you can get lots of wear out of a skirt for other occasions by changing your top, shoes and accessories.
Don’t like your legs? Then try a jumpsuit! There are so many available now (and we’ve talked about some of them in our previous blog post here). Be sure to choose a material that works for your body shape to ensure your jumpsuit is as flattering and comfortable as possible.
Shoes can make or break an outfit so it’s important to get them right!
If you’re wearing something new for the big day make sure you give them a trial run at home first (top tip, if they need wearing in then pop a pair of thick socks on and wear them around the house to soften and loosen any areas that may pinch your feet). If you have room in your bag its always wise to put a pair of flats in so you can enjoy showing off your moves on the dance floor rather than toe-tapping on the sidelines!
Finally – don’t forget the details.
Hats are worn less at weddings these days but a percher or flat beret (as seen on the Duchess of Cambridge recently), or a simple hair accessory will complete your look and instantly make it feel more ‘wedding’ appropriate. Finish your ensemble with some carefully selected jewellery and a bag or clutch in a complementary colour and you’ll be good to go!

If you thought that Festival dressing was all about wellies and waterproofs, think again. A girl (or boy) has to consider at great length what she (he) is going to wear to this year’s festivals. It isn’t just about bunging a few things in a rucksack and off you go any more. There is a ‘chic’ side to looking festival fabulous.
I love festival dressing – you can get away from your everyday wardrobe and be someone else for a weekend. Before now, I have been spotted at one, in a turquoise tutu and walking boots – not quite the wardrobe for a personal stylist!
Whether you are choosing to go to Reading, Hop Farm, 3 wishes Faery festival, Bestival, Latitude or WOMAD, it’s time to party, grab your backpack your tent and get some style inspiration. Visit https://www.festicket.com/magazine/top-20-music-festivals-in-the-uk/ and take your pick.
Ethnic print trousers are practical and stylish. Keep the tops plain and you will be able to mix and match all weekend. Team with a cross-body embroidered bag to hold all your valuables.
Denim cut-offs have always been a festival staple. Wear with gladiator sandals and a shirt if sunny, or coloured wellies and a waterproof, when the inevitable happens.
The all in one
These are everywhere in the shops in floral and geometric designs. They are so comfortable, especially when you are jumping around in a field all day to music. My only reservation on this one is the challenges when venturing to the portaloos!
Be ready for any weather in a stunning print maxi. Great with comfy flat sandals and a denim cover up to rock the look.
The cover up
A necessary item to pack for after dark. The choice is yours, parka, mesh top, or padded jacket. Or you can really up your look with a beautiful kimono-style long wrap.
It goes without saying that we will pack our hat, sunnies and of course our wellies. Though if you don’t want to carry wellies I’ve got the best news for you yet. Check out these great cover-ups http://www.feetz.co.uk/ . They even have non-slip soles if you are having to wade through inches of mud!
If you are wondering which festival I will be going to this summer it’s WOMAD. What a fabulous family oriented festival it is! See you there.
